The question that started it.
What is the difference between believing in Jesus and believing him? Between admiring the man, and actually doing what he said?
For years he sat with a single, uncomfortable question, and it led him somewhere older than the gospels. To a garden, and to a verse the sermons step around: they have become as one of us, spoken the moment human eyes opened. And then to a prayer at the far end of the book, where the Master asks that they may be one, even as we are one.
Between those two sentences, he came to see, the whole story runs: not a fall to be mourned, but an awakening to be finished.
The Red Letter Bible grew out of that seeing. It gathers every recorded word of the Master into one volume, set apart from the centuries of commentary and doctrine that have grown around them, so those words can be met directly — as the instructions for inner awakening he insisted they were: the inner chamber, the single eye, the kingdom within, the greater works.
He writes for the ones who are no longer content to worship from a distance; who sense that the garden was never a place, and that the kingdom he spoke of is nearer than they were ever told; who are conscious, or waking; and who are ready to stop believing in him long enough to believe him, and to begin the work.
The stance
What this project is, and is not.
Not a new doctrine
No one is being asked to trade the faith they have for a theory. Opinions stay in the margins. Where the work asks questions, they are questions, not conclusions.
Not an attack on the church
The red letters belong to everyone who reads them, believers included. What is being contested is the assumption that they need a broker.
A call to know
He said the truth would make you free, and he did not mean the report of truth. He meant the knowing of it. Not more believers in him — a generation who finally believe him.
